Seyðisfjörður lives up to the quintessential expectation of "how an Icelandic fishing town should really look" and, as crowning glory, enjoys the sunniest weather in the country. Venerable houses line the shoreline, reminders of a bustling time of trade and commerce during the 19th century.
The community is still firmly focused on the fishing industry, and one of Iceland's largest fishmeal operations is located here. The autumn arrival of the herring is still a cause for mass mobilization, bringing everyone from schoolchildren to the semi-retired out to the fish factories. Seyðisfjörður also played a part in W.W.II. The allied forces built a major military camp on the fjord. As a point of interest, the oil freighter El Grillo was sunk in the fjord during a German air raid.
