A small, picturesque fishing town on the eastern shores of Skjálfandi Bay. Fishing and fish processing are important economic activities, along with the fast growing tourism sector. Húsavík calls itself the Whale Watching Capital of Europe, and in recent years whale-watching participation has literally skyrocketed.
Moreover, the award winning Whale Centre located near the harbour is an ideal location to brush up on your knowledge of these magnificent giants of the ocean.
Húsavík – Bay of Houses – can proudly claim to be the oldest still-used placename in Iceland. Húsavík is also listed as being one of the emigration ports from where many Icelanders departed for North America from 1870 - 1914.
