PORT HAFNAFJORDUR

The name means ‘harbour fjord’ and refers to the excellent natural harbour, which incidentally holds the bragging rights on having Iceland’s longest history of continuous port trade (since the 1300’s).

Hafnarfjörður (just 12 km from Reykjavik) is Iceland’s third-largest town with about 24,000 residents. Saying that, this number is actually open to debate, since local folklore reveals that a staggering twenty types of dwarf, four types of gnome and all manner of elfin beings are living invisibly among human.

Every June, hordes of aspiring Vikings from all over the world converge on the town for its annual Viking Festival. The Viking days are always held when the days are longest around the summer solstice, and visitors to the festival are treated to a host of heathen entertainment and food. It’s all great family fun.
