PORT AKUREYRI

The town of Akureyri first makes its appearance on the historical map in the 16th century as a trading post for local farmers. The first permanent residence was built in 1862 when, with 286 inhabitants, Akureyri was made a municipality. An excellent harbour was soon added.

Now thought of as the capital of the north, Akureyri is a delight to explore. Take your pick of several interesting and diverse museums along with a botanical garden famed for its 2,000 species of local and foreign flowers that, incidentally, bloom outside thanks to Akureyri’s warm microclimate. Influences of its Danish trade past prevail and visitors will be sure to notice the many contrasts in the town’s interesting and varied architecture.

Strolling around Akureyri with its “chocolate box" fjord setting complete with idyllic alpine backdrop is a pleasure for the senses. The region has an enviable list of other must-sees and must-do’s as well, and there are a couple of very good eateries.

Just make sure your ship stays in port long enough to enjoy all of what is on offer.
